13B (2009)

Director: Vikram K. Kumar
Starring: R Madhavan, Neetu Chandra, Sachin Khedekar, Murli Sharma, Poonam Dhillon
Story Writer: Vikram K. Kumar

This movie titled ’13B’ falls in the horror category. There have been many such movies in Bollywood. In fact, some producers are known for making scary movies. Vikram K. Kumar is a known director in the Tamil world of entertainment.

He has shot this movie in both Hindi and Tamil simultaneously. After entering into a contract with Big Pictures, Vikram signed R. Madhavan for it as the latter is well versed in both languages and can work with equal ease. Similarly, Neetu Chandra is familiar with both languages and was therefore cast in the female lead role. Besides, she could give dates immediately for shooting.

Now, let’s talk about the title of the movie. This is the number of a flat where the hero lives with his family. It may look a little odd but this isn’t new in films. However, one wonder if the title has any major connect with the movie excepting that it’s considered ominous to name a flat bearing this number.

The movie moves around a civil engineer named Manohar played by R. Madhavan. He has just moved into a new flat numbered 13 B with his joint family, comprising his wife Neetu Chandra, his brother with wife and their two kids besides a TV soap-addicted mother played by pretty Poonam Dhillon.

Dhoondte Reh Jaoge (2009)

Directed by: Umesh Shukla
Producer by: Ronnie Screwvala
Starring: Kunal Khemu, Paresh Kumar, Soha Ali Khan, Zayed Khan, Sonu Sood, Deepal Shaw, Johny Lever, Asrani, Razzak Khan, Avtar Gill

Dhoondte Reh Jaoge’ is a comedy starring a good cast comprising Kunal Khemu, Sonu Sood, Soha Ali Khan and Paresh Rawal. Umesh Shukla has directed it. The theme is interesting and funny, too. However, the movie suffers from a lack of good script.

Had the writer provided a complete and well-woven script the movie would have certainly entertained the audience by meeting their expectations. Since three movies are releasing this Friday and every one of them belongs to a different genre, we expected ‘Dhoondte Reh Jaoge’ to provide good entertainment.

That’s why it has found more than fifty cinema halls whereas as the other two have hardly found 18 theaters each. The second movie is ‘Karma and Holi’, a romantic movie that provides Sushmita Sen and her ex-lover Ranbir Hooda’s bold and intimate love scenes. The third one is ’13 B’ – a suspense movie.

Jai Veeru (2009)

Directed by: Puneet Sira
Producer by: Shyam Bajaj
Starring: Fardeen Khan, Kunal Khemu, Dia Mirza, Anjana Sukhani, ArbaazKhan, Rajesh Khattar

In the good old days, formula films comprised of 6 songs, 7 action films, 5 blast and chase sequences, a few emotional moments, a couple of comic scenes and of course, the romantic portions. A paisa vasool entertainer was what the doctors prescribed for the ailing industry then.

JAI VEERU remains faithful to the formula, except that it borrows from a not-too-popular Hollywood film BULLETPROOF [1996; starring Damon Wayans and Adam Sandler].

After attempting a real-dark-grim film I – PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN, director Puneet Sira plays to the masses this time. With JAI VEERU, the target audience is not the thinking viewer, but those looking for a complete farce in terms of plotline. Expectedly, JAI VEERU caters to the hardcore masses that are yet to embrace new-age cinema in this multiplex era.

Veeru [Kunal Khemu] is a small-time crook who steals cars and sells them to a buyer. By a chance encounter, he meets Jai [Fardeen Khan], a mechanic, who can break into cars. They become friends; the mutual admiration culminates into a fine partnership of crime.

Aloo Chaat (2009)

Directed by: Robby Grewal
Producer by: Anuj Saxena, A. P. Parigi, Gary S
Starring: Aftab Shivdasani, Aamna Shariff, Linda Arsenio, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Manoj Pahwa, Dolly Ahluwalia, Meenakshi, Sanjay Mishra

Hrishikesh Mukherjee started a trend. Simple stories narrated in the most simplistic manner. His movies inspired a generation of film-makers and a lot of storytellers even today pay homage to Hrishi-da through their movies. Robby Grewal does so with ALOO CHAAT. Only thing, the film lacks the sweetness associated that you expect from it.

ALOO CHAAT makes you smile sporadically. At most times it’s like watching a TV serial that’s not hard to predict. 20 minutes into the film and you know what the culmination would be.

Robby’s last outing MP3: MERA PEHLA PEHLA PYAAR was an interesting experience, but ALOO CHAAT tries too hard to be a Hrishikesh Mukherjee kind of a film. Its execution brings back memories of the illustrious film-maker’s several films as also Rajshri’s DULHAN WAHI JO PIYA MAN BHAAYE [Prem Kishen, Rameshwari], but falls flat.

Aa Dekhen Zara (2009)

Director: Jehangir Surti
Producer: Viki Rajani
Starring: Neil Nitin Mukesh, Bipasha Basu, Rahul Dev, Sophie Choudhary, Bobby Vats, Shrivas Nydu, Deepak Dhariwal, Biswajeet Chatterjee, Sameer Siddiqui

Bollywood isn’t far behind in following the world trend of making movies based on ‘hat ke’ (unusual) subjects like science fiction, supernatural elements and paranormal experiences. Such movies have come to India in a big way, and in the form of time travel and paranormal occurrences.

The trend has been catching up of late and that’s why we have had just recently movies like ‘Aa Dekhen Zara’ and ‘Videsh’ (though partly), released today and also ’13 B’ and ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ (Jaadu, the lovable alien) not in the distant past. Yes, the forthcoming ’8X10 Tasveer’, will also fall in this category.

Jehangir Surti directed ‘Aa Dekhen Zara’ starring Neil Nitin Mukesh coupled with bold and pretty Bipasha Basu in the lead roles revolves around a camera! This isn’t an ordinary camera but the one that has been invented by a grandpa to capture future in its images.

The movie’s hero Neil Nitin Mukesh inherits his grandfather’s innovation as the only legacy left by the latter for his grandson. Neil playing Ray has nothing to do excepting talking to the stray pigeons on his window. Yes, he also watches his next-door sexy DJ Simi played by Bipasha Basu who lives in the opposite apartment.

Ek – The Power of One (2009)

Director: Sangeeth Sivan
Producer: K Sera Sera, Dharam Films
Starring: Nana Patekar, Bobby Deol, Shriya Saran, Chunkey Pandey, Jackie Shroff, Kubhushan Kharbanda, Kubhushan Kharbanda, Zarina Wahab, Sachin Khedekar

Bollywood has a variety of movies. Sangeet Sivan’s ‘Ek-The Power of One’, belongs to the olden days unlike the other two movies ‘Videsh’ and ‘Aa Dekhen Zara’ simultaneously released this week.

In fact, this is the Hindi remake of a Telugu film ‘Athadu’ that hit the box office in South India as Sivan cast south India’s two leading stars Mahesh Babu as the criminal and Prakash Raj as the cop, in it. Being an old fashioned one, the movie is likely to be popular among the masses instead of the class.

According to its story, Nandu played by Bobby Deol is an orphan who is hired by opposition leader Anna Mhatre to shoot him (mind it not to kill him), while he is addressing an election rally. However, even before Nandu is able to lock his target, another shot is fired, killing Anna Mhatre.

So, Nandu had to escape by leaping onto a running train. Incidentally, Nandu meets Puran played by Akshay Kapoor on the train. Puran from Punjab tells Nandu that he is going to join his family after a very long time. As the fate has it, a police officer spots Nandu and aims at him, which accidentally hits Puran, who dies on the spot.

8×10 Tasveer (2009)

Director: Nagesh Kukunoor
Producer: Percept Picture Company, T-Series
Starring: Akshay Kumar, Ayesha Takia, Sharmila Tagore, Javed Jaffrey, Anant Mahadevan

After his flop ‘Bombay to Bangkok’ last year, Nagesh Kukunoor has come back this time with a supernatural thriller titled ’8X10 Tasveer’. The film which is released today (April 3) stars Akshay Kumar in the lead role opposite Ayesha Takia, besides Sharmila Tagore, Javed Jaffery, Girish Karnad, Anant Mahadevan and Benjamin Gilani, among others.

Though the movie was initially called ‘Tasveer’ but the producer added ’8×10′ to its title later as he felt that the earlier name was jinxed. The movie’s hero has a supernatural gift to look into the past of dead people by touching their 8×10 photographs. And, mysteries begin to arise when a 8×10 photograph reveals his past. Later a personal tragedy leads him to use his power to come up with the answers!

Both the director Nagesh Kukunoor and the actor Akshay Kumar are pinning their high hopes on this mega movie costing Rs 600 million with around 1,500 prints worldwide. In spite of initial delays due to visa and luggage problems, the film’s budget increased more than expected.

Ek Se Bure Do (2009)

Director: Tarique Khan
Producer: Suresh Sheth
Starring: Arshad Warsi, Natassha, Rajpal Yadav, Tusha, Govind Namdeo, Yashpal Sharma, Virendra Saxena, Vijay Raaz, Snehal Razzak Khan

Time and again one comes across a statement that ‘this film has been made for single screen audiences in smaller towns and cities’. Well, no audience should be subjected to a movie like this.

Simply put, ‘Ek Se Bure Do’ is a terrible movie. Arshad Warsi and Rajpal Yadav are the two ‘bure log’ (bad people) in the film and honestly, it must have been embarrassing for them to be a part of a movie which doesn’t make any sense whatsoever from the first to the last frame.

The film is said to be a comedy but there is not even a single scene that makes you laugh.
